Honoring Law Librarian Shirley Hart David

Chris KruegerOne of the best parts of editing Sacramento Lawyer magazine has been to work with Shirley Hart David, the Sacramento County Public Law Librarian. Shirley has been a dedicated columnist for many years. Her columns, "Law Library News" and "Surfing From River City," have always provided helpful information about the library's programs and about legal research resources available on the internet. In addition to her writing, Shirley has also been a wonderfully helpful and supportive member of the magazine's policy committee. Month after month, I have been able to count on Shirley for good article suggestions and good advice. When we realized that Shirley was retiring from the Sacramento County Public Law Library on October 15th, it was obvious that she should be honored on our cover. Shirley moved here from Minnesota in 1983 to assume the directorship of our library. Her perseverance and vision led the library out of the windowless, cramped basement of Gordon Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse and into the renovated Hall of Justice Building at the beginning of 2001. Although the library's spectacular change of location is her most obvious legacy, her colleagues and the law library's trustees laud her for her management skill and her foresight in making use of technology to serve the public. Earlier this year, the American Association of Law Libraries honored Shirley with its Marian Gould Gallagher Award for her contributions to her profession. As Shirley leaves Sacramento to a welldeserved retirement in Hawaii, I would like to thank her for her contributions to this magazine and to our local legal community. Shirley's farewell column is on page six. View article on her accomplishments as our county's law librarian.

This issue was almost completed when we received news of the unexpected passing of Bion Gregory, the former Legislative Counsel of California and the 2003 president of the Sacramento County Bar Association. Bion was such a warm, unpretentious and goodhumored person that one almost forgot that he was a lawyer of formidable skill and accomplishment. His quarter-century as Legislative Counsel is a record that will probably not be equaled in our lifetimes, if ever. The November-December issue of this magazine will include a tribute to Bion's life and career. We extend our condolences to Bion's family. God bless you, Bion.
