From
September 7 through 9,
members of the SCBA delegation will be out in force at the State
Bar Annual Meeting and Conference of Delegates to support its
positions on the 107 resolutions to the conference. Two resolutions
were proposed by the SCBA and authored by Jay-Allen Eisen,
noted appellate lawyer, longstanding SCBA member and former chair
of the Conference. The delegation chair is W. Stuart Home,
III, a Conference veteran and SCBA council member-at-large.
As we prepare
to leave for the sun and fun of Anaheim, I am reminded that there
are many ways in which SCBA members interface with the Conference
of Delegates. As immediate past chair of the Conference of Delegates,
Diane Wasznicky continues to be active. Joan Stone
serves on the resolutions committee. Patricia Hart Jorgensen
serves on the calendar coordinating committee, keeping the Conference
on schedule. Meanwhile, Michelle Riemer will be keeping
order and counting close votes as a sergeant-at-arms.
The SCBA delegation
will caucus and lunch at noon. All SCBA members are welcome in
the hospitality suite on Friday and Saturday.
At the State
Bar Annual Meeting on September 6 through 9, sections, commissions
and committees offer numerous MCLE seminars. SCBA council member-at-large
Stacy Boulware Eurie begins her term on the executive committee
of the litigation section. If you are a litigator talk to Stacy
or me about the benefits of membership in the litigation or business
sections.
As Jay
Greiner's term on the State Bar Board of Governors ends, Windie
Scott will be sworn in as District 2 Governor. Windie will
be a wonderful representative for Sacramento and all of District
2. She is sure to infuse her term with the wisdom and enthusiasm
that have marked her professional and self-confessed "Bar
Junkie" career to date.
Our District
2 representative is our closest link to the State Bar. The recent
Brosterhous decision makes it more difficult for direct participation
by your local bar association. However, each member of the Board
of Governors is a telephone call or email message away and the
SCBA website www.sacbar.org
is one "click" away from the State Bar website.
The presidents
of the 8 largest metropolitan bar associations met recently with
the Board of Governors to discuss local concerns. Carol Prosser
and I joined the presidents and executive directors of the
Orange County, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, San Diego, Alameda,
Santa Clara County Bar Associations and the Bar Association of
San Francisco, to address the Board and meet with individual governors
and key State Bar staff.
If you are
attending the meeting this year and I have forgotten to include
you, please tell me, forgive me and meet me at the hospitality
suite for a toast (on me) to clear thinking and long-
lasting memories.
See you at
Disneyland!
