Sacramento County Public Law Library News

Coral Henninghirley David had a wonderful send off on her last day on the job. In addition to Grace Bergen presenting her with a resolution on behalf of the Women Lawyers of Sacramento, Joan Stone brought “hot off the press” the September/October issue of the Sacramento Lawyer that featured Shirley on the cover!

We recently concluded a nationwide search for the new Assistant Director for Public Services. The position became available when Ruth Nunez retired in July. I am pleased to announce Kelly Browne will be joining our staff on November 16th. Kelly has a law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and a master of librarianship from the University of Washington. She is very active in the law library community both nationally and locally. I look forward to introducing her to our legal community.

As of November 29th our domain name has changed. It is now www.saclaw.org. A huge improvement over the mouth full of dot this and dot that. Our e-mail addresses are also changing. My new e-mail address is chenning@saclaw.org.

We have purchased a new database of e-books. The titles are self help books primarily from Nolo Press and Sphinx Publishers. We hope to offer remote access to our registered library users in the near future.

Upcoming MCLE classes: I am teaching the ever popular, “Legal Research on the Internet”, from 9 a.m. to noon on January 19th. Participants will explore resources available for legal research on the Internet. This hands-on computer class will concentrate on California sources for case law, statutes, regulations and more! Three hours MCLE Credit. Tim Murphy, of The Murphy Law Firm will present “Asset Protection in Estate Planning”, from 10:00 a.m. to noon on January 13th. Basic wills and trusts do not offer much in asset protection. This course will review tools and techniques to add asset protection for clients and their beneficiaries. This class will earn two hours MCLE Credit .5 in ethics. “Effective Use of California Legislative History: A practical “how to” guide for locating legislative intent” will be given from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. on January 14th taught by Carolina Rose J.D., President of Legislative Research Inc. Case law is not always on point when the “intent” of a California statute or constitutional provision is at issue. Learn how to (1) use legislative history as a highly effective advocacy tool, (2) avoid pitfalls associated with its use, (3) better understand the legislative process and (4) how to do your own legislative intent research. This class earns 1 hour MCLE Credit. Registration information for all of our classes is available on our website www.saclaw.org or by calling 874-8541.

The law library will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve since both holidays fall on Saturday this year, and we will be closing both the branch and main library at 1p.m. on December 23rd and on December 30th.

I look forward to working with all of you. Let me know if I can be of any assistance!
