SCBA Accepts New Affiliate |
The Sacramento County Bar Association approved the St. Thomas More Society as its newest affiliate at the February meeting of the bar council. The Saint Thomas More Society of Sacramento (STMS) has been around since around 1985. STMS is an independent organization sponsored by Catholic lawyers and governed by a board, with its membership open to attorneys and other legal professionals and legislative advocates of any religious persuasion who subscribe to its purposes. The purposes of STMS are to serve as a mutual support group, to foster individual spiritual growth, to further interfaith understanding, to promote the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, and to sponsor the annual "Red Mass" for elected and appointed officials, members of the legal profession, and legislative advocates. The group does not engage in advocacy or take stands on controversial political questions; it does not engage in fundraising. The current Board is comprised of four officiers and four directors. The officers are Herb Bolz (President), Bob Roth (Vice President), Heather Hoganson (Recording Secretary), and Hermann Lorenz (Treasurer). The directors are Jan Sward, Victoria Cline, Plauche Villere, and Paul Starkey (Membership). The Rev. Charles S. McDermott, Vicar Episcopal for Theological Affairs, serves as the Bishop's liaison to STMS. STMS meetings are held at the CSUS Newman Center, located at 5900 Newman Court, off "H" Street on First Thursdays (except March, June, and July). Ample parking is available in front of and behind the building. Liturgy is at noon, followed by "brown bag" lunch. For reservations and details, contact Herb Bolz, email: herbbolz@yahoo.com.
