Making a Difference

Would you like to become more involved with your local bar association, but are not certain how or where to begin? There are a number of ways you can volunteer your time and in the process become a valuable asset to your community and your profession. The SCBA is looking for helping hands and innovative ideas with an attitude and willingness to make a difference.

Have you been wondering how or where you would fit into the structure? Your association's website www.sacbar.org lists various ways you, as a member, can become involved. There are community outreach opportunities, over 20 different committees (many of which need more volunteers) and 19 sections that you can join.

Do you know how the association gets things done? A board of directors, nominated from within its membership governs the association. Four officers, president, first-vice president, second-vice president and secretary/treasurer lead it. The board's first responsibility is to establish policies governing the programs, committees and sections of the SCBA. These policies are intended to insure that, (a) SCBA resources are soundly managed; (b) activities comply with applicable laws and ethical considerations; (c) the SCBA is not exposed to unacceptable financial risk(s); and (d) that members are treated consistently and equitably. In addition, the board is charged with the responsibility of long-range and fiscal planning. Sections and committees play a key role in identifying trends and recognizing opportunities for organizational development. The board is also responsible for keeping the overall mission of the organization clearly in focus; and in keeping programs, committees and sections in harmony with that mission. The fee arbitration, attorney referral service, and the indigent defense panel committees are oversight groups that monitor program rules, policies and procedures and make recommendations to the board for program improvements critical to the success of the SCBA. Other committees and sections play a vital role in identifying the needs of the membership. These are communicated to the board so that issues can be addressed and change facilitated in balance with finances, staff resources, and fairness to the overall membership.

Generally, board members have several years of experience serving on SCBA committees and sections prior to nomination to the board and, once elected to the board, serve as liaisons to at least two or three committees and one or two sections as guides, coaches and mentors.

It takes the board and all committees and sections working together for the common good to establish and maintain a successful professional association.
