January 2004 Report

(Editor's Note: Beginning this month, the Sacramento Lawyer will start carrying short monthly reports summarizing the activities by the SCBA's Bar Council. This report was prepared by SCBA Executive Director Carol Prosser based on the council's January meeting.)

The Members Of The Bar Council
The first meeting of the new Bar Council was held at 5:00 p.m., January 15, 2004. The officers of the association consist of President Joan Stone, First Vice President Stuart Home, Second Vice President Jack Laufenberg, and Secretary/Treasurer Stacy Boulware Eurie. The council members elected at-large are Helene Friedman, Melinda Williams, Bunmi Awoniyi, Pat Jorgensen, Heather Hoganson, Lawrence Duran; Debra Huston, Bruce Timm, Keith Staten, Deborah Patterson, Karen Stevens, and Michael Mills. The remaining bar council members are James McFetridge (Attorney Referral Service), Emory King (Conference of Delegates), Dennis O'Reilly (Indigent Defense Panel), Michael Lorilla (Sections), Dylan Wiseman (Barristers' Club of Sacramento), Victoria Jacobs (Voluntary Legal Services), Grace Begren (Women Lawyers of Sacramento), Arnold Samuel (Wiley Manual Bar Association), David Holochuck (Christian Legal Society), Marc Koenigsberg (SacLegal), Kris Burks (Federal Bar Association), Dan O'Donnell (Consumer Attorneys), Lisa Franco (LaRaza), Steve Picco (Italian/American Attorneys) and Robert Fong (Asian Bar).

Business Reports
The fiscal year 2003 ended with a net $49,000 allocated for the reserve account.

The President reported committee appointments were to be completed by March 31, 2004. If anyone is interested in serving on a committee they can contact the SCBA office (916) 448-1087 x200 , or go on line www.sacbar.org and research committees and their purpose. Affiliate Bars along with committees made reports on upcoming events: Legal Services of Northern California 's Fun Run scheduled for February 14, 2004. SacLegal will hold an MCLE seminar March 20, 2004 on the "Dissolution of Gay Relationships." Women Lawyers are planning two projects for 2004. The first WLS seminar will be "How to Start Your Own Business." The Bench and Bar Reception has been set for June 10, 2004 at the California Chamber of Commerce offices in the Esquire Building with catering by the Esquire Grill. Numerous community activities are being planned to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. SCBA is forming an ad hoc task force to collect information and develop ways and means to be involved with those programs that need lawyer involvement.

The Attorney Referral Service will be sponsoring free community seminars at Senior Centers and similar facilities in an effort to educate the public and highlight the services provided by the ARS. The first is planned for March 23, 2004 highlighting Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts. For more information on how you can become involved in the next seminar, call (916) 448-1087 x 204.
