Two
Members Honored as ABAS Continues Growth and Service Through 2002
by Richard Sueyoshi
Earlier
this year, S. Alexandria Jo and the Honorable John Chiang
were honored for their long-standing contributions to both ABAS
and our community.
"Alex"
received the ABAS President's Award in recognition of her commitment
to ABAS and the ABAS Law Foundation. Alex has been an active and
dedicated part of the ABAS family for many years. She has served
on numerous committees both with ABAS and the ABAS Law Foundation.
She has made significant contributions to the ABAS Mentor Program,
the Law Foundation Scholarship Program and has served most recently
as a member of the Board of Directors. Last year Alex, as the
ABAS representative to the Asian Bar of California, organized
and promoted the Sacramento based Asian/Pacific Bar of California
Spring Conference. API attorneys throughout the state traveled
to Sacramento to meet with many of the most prominent API elected
and appointed officials in California. A McGeorge graduate, Alex
maintains an active criminal defense and civil rights practice
with her husband Chuck in the firm Pacheco and Jo.
The
Honorable John Chiang was presented with the ABAS Community Service
Award. Although John resides in southern California, he has been
an active part of the ABAS family for the last five years. This
award was given in recognition of his work not only as an exemplary
public servant but also for his long standing work in the community.
John Chiang is presently the chair of the State Board of Equalization
and the highest ranking Asian/Pacific American elected state official
in California. John represents approximately 8.4 million residents
anchored in the greater Los Angeles area.
During
his tenure, John has promoted public-private partnerships through
community outreach and education. Although tremendously busy as
an elected official, John has remained active in state and local
community service. He has served as a board member of the Los
Angeles Nonprofit Planning Council and of the Children Affected
by AIDS Foundation; volunteer attorney for the Los Angeles County
Bar Association Hospice AIDS Project; Advisory Council Member
of Big Sisters of Los Angeles; Member of the Council of Regents
of the American Lung Association and a Member of the Regional
Interview Panel for the White House Fellowship Program. He is
a recipient of numerous awards, including the State Bar Board
of Governors Pro Bono Service Award and the California Trial Lawyer's
President's Award. He is a graduate of the Georgetown University
Law Center and an honors graduate of the University of South Florida.
As
ABAS honors John and Alex as two of its many distinguished members,
ABAS continues to grow through its 2002 membership drive. At the
direction of ABAS Membership Co-Chair Lara B. Diaz, ABAS
held its Spring Membership Mixer at Tokio Restaurant in April.
As with all ABAS membership mixers, the event gave everyone a
great opportunity to meet new members, catch up with old friends
and take a break from our busy day-to-day practices. The mixer
was attended by new ABAS members, our API law students from McGeorge
School of Law, representatives from the ABAS Law Foundation, ABAS
judicial members and a number of other friends of ABAS. As we
enter the summer months, ABAS continues its participation in the
Unity Bar Association, which will include the Fall Diversity Career
Forum for local law students led by ABAS Past President Patricia
Tsubokawa Reeves. Through the representation of Mike Mireles,
Jr., ABAS continues to participate in the Data Collection
Advisory Committee on Racial Profiling with the Sacramento Police
Department.
Many
more ABAS events wait ahead of us. We invite and encourage all
members of the bar to join ABAS as we continue through 2002.
