New CEB OnLaw and Westlaw Databases Available at the Law Library

The Law Library recently renegotiated its contract with Westlaw so that you now have access to more practical legal databases than ever! Probably the most exciting new addition is the California State Court Dockets Plus database, which enables you to search 18 of the 58 California Superior Court dockets (including Sacramento County), the California Appellate and Supreme Courts' dockets, and all the California federal courts' dockets, including the 9th Circuit and United States Supreme Court. The Dockets database only includes dockets, not the actual court filings. If you find a reference to a brief you are interested in, ask the librarian at the Reference Desk; we may be able to locate the brief in our "Behind the Desk" Westlaw package.

Other new databases include: Am. Jur. 2d, Am. Jur. Pleading and Practice, ALR, Cal. Jur. 3d, Witkin's California Treatises, the California Legislative History Library, California and National Transactional Forms, the California Family Law Practitioner Library with DissoMaster, the California Business and Real Property Law Practitioner Library, the Miller & Starr Real Estate Library, and the Civil Rights/Disabilities Litigation Specialist Library. Our license with Westlaw allows seven people in the library to use the database at the same time. Westlaw is available on all 17 of our public access computers.

SCPLL is also proud to introduce Onlaw, a fully searchable web-based collection of CEB's respected and useful practice books and Action Guides on over 90 different topics, including Business Law, Civil Litigation, Criminal Law, Employment Law, Estate Planning, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, and Workers Compensation.

Like the CEB practice books and Action Guides, OnLaw includes fully-integrated attorney-drafted forms, accompanied by explanations and directions. Most of the attorney-drafted clauses and sample forms are available to download in Word or WordPerfect file formats so you can save them on a diskette or USB drive at the Library and take them with you to edit at your home or office later. OnLaw is available on all 17 of our public access computers, and there is no limit to how many people can use OnLaw at the same time. Stop by the Library and check it out!

SCPLL is also offering a two-part series of classes on these new databases. The first, "LEXIS & Westlaw: Tips and Techniques for Online Legal Research @ SCPLL," is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2007. The $30 class price includes pizza. The second class, "Beyond Lexis & Westlaw: SCPLL's Other Legal Research Databases," will be held a week later, Wednesday, May 2, at the same time. This class also costs $30 and includes pizza, but if you sign up for both classes in the series you only have to pay $50—that's a $10 value!
