Started
during the era of the Rose Bird Court (1977-1986), Women
Lawyers of Sacramento continued its tradition of honoring
Supreme Court Justices.
The annual reception, cosponsored by the Sacramento County
Bar Association, was held on November 4, 2003, hosting
all seven members of the California Supreme Court.
Sacramento Superior Court Presiding Judge
Michael Garcia introduced several judges present from that
court. Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Arthur Scotland introduced two associate justices of the Third Appellate
District, Justice Ronald Robie, and newly-appointed Justice
Kathleen Butz. Federal Magistrate Judge Kim Mueller was
also recognized. Chief Justice Ronald George introduced
each associate justice, and then spoke about recent experiences
of the Supreme Court.
Hors
d’oeurves (Rayna’s Gourmet
Catering), wine and other refreshments were enjoyed by
over 120 members of the local judiciary and bar who attended.
The reception, as in past years, took place at the Discovery
Museum in Old Sacramento. Militia Rios- Samaniego, the
curator and director of exhibits at the museum, presented
the new exhibit “ Sacramento’s Buried Past” displayed
under the glass floor of the museum’s central gallery.

the city block between I and J to 8th and 9th (now Plaza
de Caesar Chavez Park). The sites, excavated in 1988, offer
a look at occupations of Sacramentans in the 19th and early
20th centuries. More information on the museum and special
