Unity Bar's Third Annual Diversity Career Forum:
Good Food, Good Company, Great Experience
by Donna Tamanaha

Over seventy bright and inquisitive (not to mention focused) students from the Sacramento area law schools eagerly began or continued their quest for job opportunities by meeting over twenty potential employers at the Discovery Museum History Center in Old Sacramento on October 28, 2002. Organized by the Unity Bar Associations - Asian/Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento; La Raza Lawyers Association of Sacramento; SacLEGAL; Wiley Manuel Bar Association of Sacramento; and Women Lawyers of Sacramento - this event is on its way to becoming a part of the tradition in this community.

Even if we forget for a moment the scrumptious food from Louie's or depictions of California history placed on two different levels of the museum maze, employers and students alike learned a little more about each other. Representatives from state and federal agencies, from the public interest field, as well as from large and small private law firms shared their knowledge of employment opportunities in their respective field. Students or job seekers were able to freely “shop around.” Many made serious contacts. For the first year students, the opportunity to informally mingle with and learn about prospective employers better prepared them for other employment quests.

The event was underwritten by Downey Brand Seymour & Rohwer; Foley & Lardner; Livingston & Mattesich; Moreno & Rivera; McDonough Holland & Allen; Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe; Pillsbury Winthrop; and the Unity Bar Associations of Sacramento.

The brochure with the "Unity" logo was designed by Andrea Diaz. Mackrenroth Ryan & Fong donated the printing of the brochure.

Employer-participants included: California Department of Corporations; California Department of Education; California Department of Health Services; California Department of Insurance; California Department of Justice; California Franchise Tax Board; Cuneo Black Ward & Missler; Downey Brand Seymour & Rohwer; Federal Public Defender’s Office; Foley & Lardner; Legal Services of Northern California; Livingston & Mattesich; Mackenroth Ryan & Fong; McDonough Holland & Allen; Moreno & Rivera; Nakagawa & Rico; Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe; Pillsbury Winthrop; Reeves & Associates; Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office; Sacramento County Public Defender's Office; Sacramento Superior Court; United States Attorney's Office; and the United States Trustee’s Office.
