Who are the Barristers?

You may already be a Barrister and not even know it.  If you are a SCBA member and have been practicing for 5 years or less, or are age 36 or less, then you are a Barrister.  It is as easy as registering as a member of the SCBA which only costs $45 (or less) during your first year of practice. Welcoming new members and ideas is crucial to continuing the mission of both the Barristers’ Club and the Sacramento County Bar Association: to help new lawyers!

Don’t be shy about contacting us.  We look forward to meeting our fellow members and welcoming your energy and ideas.  We encourage you to get more involved by meeting our Board members, volunteering for Board subcommittees, and attending and volunteering at our events.

Our Annual Educational Events

Each year The Barristers’ Club’s Board of Directors meets in January to plan and schedule the Club’s events for the year.  Some of our signature educational events include the following:

Bridging the Gap from Law School to Law Practice

In this seminar, we invite practitioners and judges from the community to provide new attorneys with insight into areas of practice and the ethics of the profession. The following is a sampling of the topics covered: civil practice, alternative legal careers, governmental practice and transactional practice. Typically, attendees are able to earn 3+ hours of MCLE credit for attending this event.

Motion for Summary Judgment Seminar

The Motion for Summary Judgment Seminar is an annual event that focuses a skill every civil litigator needs: how to effectively make or oppose a summary judgment motion.  The presenters at this Seminar have included experienced litigators, Superior Court Judges and Justices from the Court of Appeal.  Attendees leave this event with new techniques for effectively making and opposing these critical motions and also learn about common pitfalls to avoid.

Law & Motion Seminar

The Law & Motion Seminar is an annual event typically presented by Sacramento Superior Court Civil Law and Motion judges.  It attracts both new and experienced practitioners.   This event has proven invaluable practitioners because the presenting judges speak directly and candidly to the attendees about how to be effective advocates in their courtrooms.

Federal Nuts & Bolts Seminar

Both federal and bankruptcy rules and procedures are covered in this helpful seminar which places an emphasis on providing attendees with an understanding of how federal court differs from state court and what attorneys need to know about the procedures and customs of the Eastern District. This event is held at the Easter District Federal Courthouse and includes presentations from Federal Judges and clerks..

Lunch Seminars – Variety of Topics

Approximately every other month, the Barristers’ Club sponsors lunch programs on various topics. In the past, these have included topics such as mediation, appellate practice, fish & wildlife law, e-discovery, trial techniques and deposition strategies. These luncheons are a great way to get to know your fellow Barristers and obtain MCLE credits.

Our Annual Social Events

In addition to our educational events, The Barristers’ Club hosts many social events.  Some of our signature annual social events include:

Judicial Reception

This annual event is held in honor of our local judiciary and recognizes the hard work and productive contributions our local judges make to our legal community.  At this event new attorneys get the opportunity to meet local judges and justices at a fun, relaxed evening event that includes drinks and appetizers.

Summer Associates Reception

This yearly gathering is held in honor of the Diversity Hiring & Retention program in which area firms welcome law students to clerk with them and thereby receive their first real world introduction to the practice of law. Experienced attorneys, judges, and government officials join together to welcome younger counsel into the practice of law.

Networking Socials

In addition to our signature socials, The Barristers’ Club hosts frequent networking socials for our members at local bars and restaurants.  Be on the lookout for announcements from us about our next upcoming networking social.
