The Barristers' Club provides new lawyers with:
Any person who is a member of the Sacramento County Bar Association is automatically a Barrister if they are (a) under 36 years of age; or (b) has been in practice five years or less; whichever is later.
The Barristers' Club is planning several exciting new events for this summer and fall, and welcoming new members and ideas is crucial to continuing the mission of both the Barristers' Club and the Sacramento County Bar Association: to help you!
You may not know that you already are a Barrister. If you are a SCBA member and have been practicing for 5 years or less, or are age 36 or less, you are the reason why the Barristers' Club is here! Also remember that Sacramento County Bar Association membership is only $35 during your first year of practice. Everyone who has ever become involved with the Barristers' Club was a new attorney, so please don't be shy about contacting us. We look forward to meeting you and we welcome your ideas.
Lastly, feel free to join us at our monthly meetings. In addition to meeting the 12 Barristers' Board members, you can join a sub-committee and become more involved with us. Board members are elected each December, and you may decide that you would like to run for one at the end of this year. If so, start now — it is never too early to network!
In this seminar, we invite practioners and judges from the community to provide new attorneys with insight into areas of practice and the ethics of the profession. The following is a sampling of the topics covered: civil practice, alternative legal careers, governmental practice and transactional practice. Typically, 3+ hours of MCLE credits are available for this event free of charge.
The Thursday prior to the seminar (held on a Saturday in January), we invite new admittees to the Bar to a reception at a local watering hole where the new admittees can mingle with experienced practioners and local judges — from the federal court, state court and State Courts of Appeal.
Both federal and bankruptcy rules and procedures will be covered in this tremendously helpful seminar with an emphasis on providing attendees with an understanding of how federal court differs from state court and what attorneys need to know about the procedures and customs of the Eastern District. It will be held at the new federal courthouse, and written materials, as well as bagels, coffee and juice will be provided.
Every year, the Barristers' Club organizes a luncheon where local attorneys, law firms and judges welcome members of the California Supreme Court. The event features an address by the Chief Justice as well as a speech by a keynote speaker. The event also provides attendees the opportunity to meet and talk with members of the California Supreme Court.
This yearly gathering is held in honor of the Minority Fellowship program in which area firms welcome law students to clerk with them and thereby receive their first real world introduction to the practice of law. Experienced attorneys, judges, and government officials join together to welcome younger counsel into the practice of law.
Both the Law & Motion and Appellate Practice seminars are annual events that draw both new attorneys and experienced practitioners. The hour or two you spend attending these seminars may be more valuable than many hours spent on your own. This is because civil litigation experts give you advice that they accumulated throughout their careers on what to do, and what not to do, in the civil litigation and appellate arenas.
Every other month, the Barristers' Club sponsors lunch programs on various topics. In the past, these have included topics such as mediation, trial techniques and deposition strategies. These luncheons are a great way to get to know your fellow Barristers and obtain MCLE credits.
The Barristers' hosts social events several times throughout the year at a local watering hole.
Look for announcements of these events, and all Barristers' activities, in the DateBook section of the Daily Recorder, (the back page). Also look for our monthly Barristers' Bulletin in the Daily Recorder, which appears the last Tuesday of every month.
